MDA Space to Supply Drones to Royal Canadian Navy Vessels

David McGuinty on MDA Canadian Navy drones contract win

MDA Space, a Canadian space technology company, has secured two contracts to integrate up to six new uncrewed aircraft systems into the Royal Canadian Navy’s Halifax-class vessels. The Ontario-based company said the project is expected to improve the ships’ intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities and enhance their ability to detect and respond to potential threats.

“These advanced systems extend our reach, enhance our situational awareness and strengthen our ability to respond to emerging threats both at home and abroad,” National Defence Minister David McGuinty said in a separate statement on Tuesday. “As Canada continues to face evolving security challenges, this capability ensures our sailors have the equipment they need to successfully conduct operations in a rapidly changing world.”

MDA Space will initially deliver two drones under an estimated $28 million award and associated in-service support services under a $20 million five-year contract, part of the RCN’s Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance Uncrewed Aircraft Systems project.

MDA Space CEO Mike Greenley highlighted his team’s excitement to deliver technologies that support the RCN’s mission. “The ISTAR UAS project is a clear example of the advanced innovation required to support the modern operational demands of the Canadian Armed Forces and of deep domestic Canadian industrial capabilities available to help them achieve that mission,” he said.
