New NATO Logistics Center in Sweden to Support Northern Flank

Pål Jonson on Sweden's NATO logistics center

Sweden’s Ministry of Defence announced Thursday that Stockholm has directed the Swedish Armed Forces to establish a NATO logistics headquarters in Enköping and have it operational by the end of 2027.

The ministry said the logistics hub is envisioned for around 70 personnel during peacetime operations and can accommodate an expanded workforce of up to 160 during alert and wartime status. The center will be incorporated into the NATO command structure, with the alliance coordinating its manpower staffing and allowing all allies to assign their staff representatives.

According to the defense ministry, Sweden and other Nordic countries will soon unite in a NATO northwest area of operations. The move calls for forming a joint logistics support group headquarters to lead and coordinate the maintenance and transport of military units within their current NATO areas.

Minister for Defence Pål Jonson said the local NATO presence will boost the country’s security and deterrence. “The logistics center assists the defense of NATO’s northern flank,” he added.

In an interview with public broadcaster SVT, Jonson pointed out that the logistics hub’s goal is to facilitate the movement of large quantities of equipment and personnel across Sweden.
