ICEYE has signed a contract worth about $185.8 million to provide synthetic aperture radar satellites and related systems to the Finnish Defence Forces. The agreement includes options for extending the satellites’ life cycle and expanding the system in the future, the Finland-based manufacturer and operator said Monday.
Brg. Gen. Juha-Matti Ylitalo, deputy director of the FDF Logistics Command, and Seppo Aaltonen, ICEYE vice president for Nordics and NATO, signed the contract in Tampere. The deal follows a June letter of intent between ICEYE and Finland’s Ministry of Defence aimed at boosting the country’s space-based military intelligence and surveillance capabilities.
ICEYE said its SAR satellites and ground systems are designed to strengthen situational awareness by delivering high-resolution imagery in all weather and lighting conditions. The company currently operates 54 SAR satellites in orbit.
Pekka Laurila, ICEYE co-founder and chief strategy officer, said the contract marks “a pivotal moment, transitioning from intent to a tangible commitment that will equip Finland with a sovereign, space-based intelligence capability.”
“We are proud to provide the technology that will not only secure Finland’s position as a leader in this critical domain but also form the foundation for a long-term partnership that will enhance the collective security of its allies,” he added.
The company also leads a consortium with Finnish industry partners — including Insta, Huld, DA-Group and the Finnish Meteorological Institute — to support the Ministry of Defence in developing advanced space and joint intelligence capabilities. That collaboration ties into industrial participation under Finland’s F-35 fighter acquisition program.
