Motorola Solutions and Nokia have formed a strategic partnership to develop a next-generation tactical communications system for U.K. defense agencies. Announced on Thursday, the modular platform combines Motorola’s deployable Terrestrial Trunked Radio infrastructure with Nokia’s 4G/5G AirScale technology to enable secure voice and high-speed data links in challenging operational environments.

The rugged system can be deployed in under 30 minutes, supporting  voice, video and sensor-driven data services on the front lines. Central to the system is Motorola’s Silvus mobile ad hoc networking technology, creating a scalable, self-healing mesh that extends connectivity across dispersed units. This setup supports AI-enabled, long-range video sensors and uncrewed platforms, providing commanders with real-time situational awareness.

Motorola acquired Los Angeles-based Silvus Technologies in August for $4.4 billion to expand its footprint in the unmanned systems market. Silvus’ MANET expertise is now a central component of the new defense communications architecture.

Fergus Mayne, Motorola Solutions’ U.K. and Ireland country manager, emphasized the importance of secure, real-time connectivity for military operations.” With Nokia, we’re providing defense forces with powerful, next-generation communications to help bring critical information to the front lines.”

As military organizations worldwide seek resilient, coalition-ready networks, industry partnerships will play a central role. These trends will be discussed at the 2025 GovCon International Summit on Oct. 16. Book your slot today.

Giuseppe Targia, head of space and defense at Nokia, highlighted the adaptability of their private wireless technologies for military needs. “Our industry-leading technology enables secure, high-speed data, voice and video connectivity, empowering military operations in the most demanding environments.”

The partnership builds on Motorola’s previous experience with containerized communications systems for the German Armed Forces and recent upgrades to the German Navy’s Sachsen-class frigate, enhancing secure voice and data sharing capabilities.
