Rheinmetall is days away from acquiring German shipbuilder Naval Vessels Luerssen as part of its push into the naval domain, CEO Armin Papperger told Breaking Defense at the DSEI trade show in London.

Papperger said NVL’s strong order book allows Rheinmetall to expand by integrating missile systems, launch technologies, simulation tools and electronic warfare capabilities into naval platforms. He added that Germany and Europe represent major markets, noting Berlin will soon need to replace frigates and corvettes that are over 30 years old.

NVL, which operates shipyards in Hamburg, Wilhelmshaven and Wolgast, is reportedly seeking to exit defense shipbuilding to concentrate on luxury yacht production. The company is currently under contract to deliver three Type 424 intelligence ships to the German Navy, with construction of the second vessel underway at its Peene-Werft yard in Wolgast.

The shipbuilder has also pursued international ventures, including a joint project with U.K.-based Kraken Technology Group to build autonomous surface vessels at the Blohm+Voss yard in Hamburg, and a joint venture in Egypt supporting the construction of 10 offshore patrol vessels for the Egyptian Navy.

Rheinmetall, traditionally known for tanks, armored vehicles and ammunition, has been diversifying into new domains. In addition to naval expansion, the company has invested in space capabilities with ICEYE and next-generation military technology with Honeywell, Lockheed Martin and MBDA.
