Germany is preparing to acquire 424 wheeled armored vehicles for the Bundeswehr in a procurement valued at about $8.1 billion, based on finance ministry documents cited by Reuters. The Bundestag’s budget committee is expected to review and approve the package in the coming days.

The acquisition will be split into two major contracts. Reuters reported that General Dynamics will provide 274 scout vehicles under a framework agreement worth approximately $4.1 billion, with initial deliveries scheduled for 2028. The second award, valued at roughly $4 billion, covers 150 Schakal infantry fighting vehicles to be delivered by Artec GmbH, the joint venture between KNDS and Rheinmetall, through the European defense procurement agency OCCAR. Deliveries of the Schakal are planned between 2027 and 2031.

The agreement also allows for options. Berlin could order up to 82 additional scout vehicles, which would bring the General Dynamics order to 356 units and increase its value to nearly $5.4 billion, according to Reuters. The Schakal contract may likewise be expanded at a later stage.

Artec’s Boxer platform, which underpins the Schakal design, includes modular armored variants such as the Armored Personnel Carrier, Repair and Recovery, and Cargo vehicles.

As part of its broader modernization efforts, Germany also approved the procurement of 90 Rafael Litening 5 targeting pods in August in a deal estimated at about $418 million.
