General Dynamics, Ricardo Partner on British Army Light Mobility Vehicle

General Dynamics Ricardo next-gen light mobility vehicle

General Dynamics Land Systems–UK and Ricardo have partnered to develop a new tactical vehicle for the British Army under the service’s Light Mobility Vehicle program, part of the broader Land Mobility initiative.

The collaboration combines defense engineering and automotive innovation to produce a robust, off-the-shelf platform based on the 2025 Ford Ranger Super Duty. The upgraded vehicle integrates General Dynamics’ defense systems with Ricardo’s advanced mobility technology, offering payload capacity of up to 2,000 kilograms, enhanced powertrain options and advanced trailer technology while retaining the Ranger’s safety and reliability standards.

Demonstrator models, including militarized 4×4 and 6×6 variants, were unveiled at DSEI 2025, highlighting adaptability and readiness for deployment across varied terrains.

Scott Milne, vice president and general manager at GDLS–UK, said the bespoke Ford Ranger will be delivered from General Dynamics facilities in South Wales, supporting U.K. jobs and defense capabilities.

The LMV will be formally pitched to the British Army as part of its $2.9 billion Land Mobility Programme, which seeks to replace legacy Land Rover and Pinzgauer vehicles.

A number of defense industry players have also noted their intention to compete for the program’s various categories. BAE Systems, GM Defense and NP Aerospace have formed Team LionStrike to propose a fleet of modern vehicles, including GM Defense’s Infantry Squad Vehicle based on the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2.

At DSEI 2025 in London, Rheinmetall UK unveiled its Tactical Vehicle, a modular light platform derived from the Caracal airborne vehicle and based on the latest G-Wagen chassis, as its own proposal for the LMV opportunity.
