Germany has selected RTX’s Raytheon-built AN/SPY-6 radar for its upcoming F127 frigates under a proposed Foreign Military Sales contract with the U.S. Navy, positioning the country as the first international customer for the advanced air and missile defense system.
The planned deal would cover the delivery and installation of SPY-6(V)1 radars on eight F127-class ships, as well as engineering services to tailor the system to the frigates’ design.
“Germany’s selection of SPY-6 reaffirms global confidence in the radar’s advanced capabilities and its critical role in enhancing naval defense,” said Barbara Borgonovi, president of naval power at Raytheon. “Integrating the radar on F127 frigates will provide the German Navy with a multi-mission solution that enables faster and more informed decision-making at sea.”
Currently fielded across seven U.S. Navy ship classes, the SPY-6 family features a modular design built from 2-foot-square radar assemblies. Four arrays combine to provide 360-degree coverage, enabling simultaneous tracking of ballistic and cruise missiles, aircraft and surface threats.
Strengthening NATO’s Maritime Shield
Analysts said participation in the F127 program will embed Germany within NATO’s next-generation naval defense network. The frigates are expected to deliver sea-based protection against hypersonic and ballistic missiles while adding long-range precision strike capability — bolstering the alliance’s collective missile defense architecture.
Meanwhile, RTX secured a $646 million contract modification in June to continue producing and maintaining the AN/SPY-6 radar family for the U.S. Navy, underscoring ongoing demand for the system at home and abroad.
