Brazilian aerospace manufacturer Embraer has signed a contract with the Swedish government for four C-390 Millennium multi-mission aircraft as part of a broader European initiative for joint procurement and interoperability. The finalized agreement follows an initial announcement in April.

Under the deal, Sweden also secured options to purchase seven additional aircraft, paving the way for future acquisitions by other European partners. The acquisition makes Sweden the latest NATO member to join the Netherlands- and Austria-led C-390 partnership, which jointly ordered nine aircraft in 2024.

Efficiency and Interoperability

Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson said the purchase supports the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the Swedish Air Force. “With the C-390 Millennium, I am convinced we will increase our operational efficiency while enhancing interoperability with our European partners,” he said.

According to Embraer, the C-390 Millennium is a next-generation multi-mission aircraft capable of airlift, air-to-air refueling and humanitarian operations. In service with the Brazilian, Portuguese and Hungarian air forces, the platform is designed for heavy payloads, long range and rugged operations on temporary or unpaved runways.

Embraer Defense & Security President and CEO Bosco da Costa Junior said the Swedish contract reinforces the C-390’s growing role in Europe as “the new standard for tactical airlift among NATO nations.”
