Rheinmetall U.K. has secured a contract from the NATO Support and Procurement Agency to supply its Trailblazer driver vision and local situation awareness system in support of the United Kingdom’s M270 A2 multiple launch rocket system, or M270 A2 MLRS, upgrade.

The company said Thursday that the agreement is valued in the “mid-single-digit million euro range” and sets prototype delivery in early 2026.

The full production of the Trailblazer is also expected to begin in 2026.

How Will Rheinmetall’s Trailblazer Enhance the MLRS Fleet?

The contract directs Rheinmetall UK to design and integrate a vehicle vision capability tailored to the specific requirements of the M270 A2 MLRS.

Trailblazer, developed and manufactured in the U.K., is a software-defined and safety integrity level 2-certified system. It offers an expanded vehicle field of view even in adverse weather or low-light conditions.

It also provides very low latency cameras to enable terrain navigation and obstacle avoidance and enhance situational awareness.

“We are delighted to be able to upgrade the U.K.’s latest MLRS A2 platforms with the very best vehicle vision systems,” commented Richard Streeter, managing director for Rheinmetall Electronics U.K.

Trailblazer is already installed on the Boxer mechanized infantry vehicle, Challenger 3 battle tank and Warrior infantry fighting vehicle. The M270 A2 will be the 17th military platform to use Trailblazer.

Why Is the U.K. Upgrading Its MLRS?

The British military is upgrading its M270A1 fleet to the A2 variant to recapitalize the capability. Lockheed Martin, which is carrying out the upgrade, will deliver 61 M270A2 MLRS to the British Army in the coming years.
