- Arcfield Canada and Sun Test Systems signed an MOU
- The companies will explore ground support equipment capabilities for the Canadian Armed Forces
- Potential applications to support Canada’s F-35 fighters and helicopters
Arcfield Canada and Sun Test Systems B.V. are joining forces to develop new ground support equipment, or GSE, capabilities and sustainment infrastructure for the Canadian Armed Forces.
How Will Arcfield Canada and Sun Test Systems Support Canadian Military Aviation?
Under a newly signed memorandum of understanding, Arcfield Canada said Monday the companies will assess opportunities to support and manufacture advanced aerospace GSE, bringing together Arcfield Canada’s experience in life cycle sustainment, supply chain management and maintenance services with Sun Test Systems’ portfolio of powered multifunction GSE for military aerospace customers.
Arcfield Chairman and CEO Kevin Kelly, a former Wash100 awardee, said the company’s experience working with aerospace original equipment manufacturers and defense organizations has positioned it to contribute to Canada’s evolving defense requirements.
“This partnership reinforces our commitment to innovation and ensures that we are poised and well-positioned to support Canada’s evolving defense priorities,” Kelly said.
What Role Could the Partnership Play in Canada’s F-35 Transition?
The agreement comes as Canada is advancing plans to introduce the F-35A into service, with the first aircraft scheduled for delivery to Luke Air Force Base in Arizona in 2026 for Canadian pilot training. According to Canada’s Department of National Defence, the first F-35s are expected to arrive at Canadian Forces Base Cold Lake, Alberta, in late 2028, with initial operational capability targeted for 2029 and full operational capability projected for 2033.
Luc Sabourin, vice president of Arcfield Canada, said, “Canada is entering an important new era in military aviation, and the introduction of an advanced fighter brings with it the need for an equally innovative and sustainable support infrastructure. Our relationship with Sun Test Systems provides an opportunity to combine complementary capabilities and explore solutions that can strengthen Canadian sustainment capacity, support operational readiness and contribute to Canada’s broader aerospace and defense industrial base.”
Sun Test Systems Commercial Director Arjen Vos said the company views support for the Canadian Armed Forces as a priority and highlighted potential applications for both F-35 fighters and helicopters.
How Does the MOU Build on Arcfield Canada’s Sustainment Experience?
In March 2024, Arcfield Canada secured a $157.4 million follow-on contract for continued avionics in-service support for Canada’s CF-18 fleet. Under that agreement, the company and its industry partners were tasked with providing avionics spare parts and end-to-end supply chain services to the Royal Canadian Air Force.
In 2025, the company was selected as part of MDA Space’s solution for the Royal Canadian Navy’s Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance uncrewed aircraft systems program, providing specialized airworthiness expertise for the new capability.
