Vodafone Group and AST SpaceMobile have launched SatCo, a joint venture based in Luxembourg focused on offering satellite connectivity services to European customers. Initially disclosed in March, the JV will act as a distributor for AST SpaceMobile’s satellite services to regional mobile network operators using a single turnkey arrangement.
According to AST SpaceMobile founder, Chairman and CEO Abel Avellan, the new partnership will contribute to Europe’s standing as a pioneer in direct-to-mobile satellite services and its efforts to advance digital independence. “Together, we are building secure, resilient cellular broadband infrastructure to serve Europe’s connectivity needs — anywhere, anytime,” he said.
Among those expected to be offered by the JV include a space-based cellular broadband network under development at AST that works directly with traditional smartphones for government and commercial customers. According to the product’s webpage, the solution will not require subscribers to switch between cellular service providers by working closely with telco companies to provide reliable connectivity using AST SpaceMobile’s constellation.
“Our service will ensure all European citizens, businesses and governments enjoy uninterrupted, ubiquitous mobile broadband connectivity across the whole continent. Europe can take the lead in new direct-to-device mobile broadband technology,” said Vodafone CEO Margherita Della Valle.
