IDEMIA Public Security and Sopra Steria have launched eu-LISA’s new shared Biometric Matching System, or sBMS, designed to strengthen border control and migration management across the Schengen Area.
The system serves as the European Union’s central biometric database, storing and matching fingerprints and facial images. It registers third-country nationals upon entry into any member state, enabling authorities to quickly verify their identity.
The shared Biometric Matching System was launched in tandem with eu-LISA’s Visa Information System, which supports the EU’s common visa policy and border checks. Over time, it will also be integrated with additional platforms such as the forthcoming European Entry/Exit System.
The launch builds on a partnership spanning more than two decades, during which the two companies have supported the EU’s large-scale IT needs. IDEMIA has delivered biometric travel solutions to streamline border operations, while Sopra Steria has contributed expertise in central EU systems and national interfaces.
“With our work to design and implement the sBMS, Europe will manage one of the largest biometric systems in the world,” said Tim Ferris, senior vice president for travel and transport at IDEMIA Public Security. “This is another example of how IDEMIA’s technology can make the world a safer place more than ever before, and we’re proud to play a critical role in this journey.”
