Norway Extends $695M to Germany’s Patriot System Delivery to Ukraine

Jonas Gahr Store on Norway and Germany Patriot system for Ukraine

Norway has committed $695 million to support Germany’s initiative to provide airspace defense capabilities to Ukraine.

“Together with Germany, we are now ensuring that Ukraine receives powerful air defense systems,” said Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. He emphasized that both nations are closely collaborating to assist Ukraine in defending itself and protecting its civilian population from Russian air attacks.

The German-Norwegian partnership began during a summer meeting between Store and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, where they agreed to donate two complete Patriot systems, previously owned by Germany, to Ukrainian forces.

German Federal Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius highlighted the importance of the collaboration, stating that it will “significantly strengthen Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.”

According to Raytheon, the manufacturer of the Patriot, the air and missile system powers the integrated air and missile defense of 19 nations. The system, which includes radars, command and control technology, and various interceptors, is designed to detect, identify, and neutralize a wide array of aerial threats, including tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones.

In addition to working with Norway, Germany is also facilitating the delivery of the Hensoldt-made TRML-4D air defense radar. The multimillion-dollar deal aims to help Ukraine swiftly identify and classify aerial threats.
