Ericsson has entered into a $3 billion partnership with Export Development Canada to accelerate investment in 5G, 6G and quantum technologies. The three-year agreement will provide financial and insurance support to expand Ericsson’s Canadian-led innovation and global projects, according to a Wednesday announcement from Canada’s export credit agency.

The partnership is intended to deepen Ericsson’s integration with Canada’s supply chain and technology ecosystem, support the global reach of domestic innovations and create new opportunities for local companies within Ericsson’s international network.

Ericsson employs more than 3,100 people in Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto. Its Canadian teams focus on wireless innovation, AI-driven network management and quantum communications.

In 2024, the company signed a five-year research and development partnership with the Canadian government valued at about $455 million, which included $56 million in federal funding to bolster 5G development.

“Canada is one of Ericsson’s most important hubs for global research and development, and this partnership with Export Development Canada will allow us to scale that leadership even further,” said Börje Ekholm, president and CEO of Ericsson.

Alison Nankivell, president and CEO of EDC, said the collaboration also underscores a shared commitment to strengthen Canada’s role in next-generation telecommunications. “It’s a strong fit with EDC’s strategy to work with global companies that have a significant presence in Canada and operate in high-growth sectors,” she said.
