Canada has announced $19.5 million in funding for three Winnipeg-based projects aimed at enhancing the country’s defense industrial capacity and advancing aerospace and manufacturing capabilities.
What Projects Are Receiving Funding?
The Canadian government said Friday the funding, announced by Minister of Northern and Arctic Affairs Rebecca Chartrand, will support projects by Magellan Aerospace, StandardAero and Win-Shield Devices through Prairies Economic Development Canada’s Regional Defence Investment Initiative. Magellan Aerospace and StandardAero will each receive $8 million to establish an advanced machining center for aircraft component production and support aerospace maintenance, repair and overhaul work, respectively. Win-Shield Devices will receive $3.5 million to build a personal protective equipment manufacturing facility.
How Does the Investment Support Defense Capabilities?
The investment supports Magellan Aerospace’s work on the F404 and F414 engine programs and the expansion of StandardAero’s Winnipeg campus, which will provide engine maintenance for the P-8A Poseidon multi-mission aircraft. The facility will also support the Royal Canadian Air Force’s fleet of CP-140, CC-130H and CC-130J platforms. The funding also supports Win-Shield Devices’ investments in equipment, infrastructure and workforce expansion, helping accelerate technology development and scale manufacturing while strengthening the domestic supply chain. In addition, these initiatives are projected to generate over 150 new jobs, sustain more than 100 existing roles and benefit more than 10 small and medium-sized enterprises across Manitoba.
Canada’s Broader Defense Strategy?
The funding aligns with Canada’s broader efforts to strengthen its defense industrial base through programs such as the RDII, the Defense Industrial Strategy and the Defense Investment Agency. These efforts emphasize building domestic capacity, supporting local industry and reinforcing supply chains.
