EDGE Group has finished work on the MK 82 Penetrator, a UAE-made aircraft munition designed for hardened targets and bunkers.

LAHAB, EDGE’s medium- to large-caliber ammunition manufacturer, subjected the weapon to performance and qualification trials, the company said Friday.

What Did the MK 82 Penetrator Demonstrate?

The MK 82 Penetrator maintained its trajectory after striking reinforced concrete more than one meter thick without showing the “J” effect, which refers to a weapon deviating from its path on impact. The campaign also included penetration assessments against hardened target types and environmental qualification tests.

How Can the MK 82 Penetrator Be Used?

The weapon is compatible with aircraft in North Atlantic Treaty Organization configuration, including fourth-, 4.5- and fifth-generation fighters. Its compatibility also extends to variable-geometry strike aircraft, advanced jet trainers and light attack aircraft.

Aircraft already cleared to use the MK 82 General Purpose munition can also carry the Penetrator. The weapon can use AL TARIQ and THUNDER guidance kits developed by EDGE for the MK 82 General Purpose munition.

What Is LAHAB Developing Next?

The MK 83 Penetrator is intended as a follow-on weapon, with the program in an advanced stage of development. The two munitions are part of LAHAB’s effort to develop and manufacture munitions domestically, supporting what EDGE described as a sovereign capability for the UAE and its partners.

LAHAB is producing MK 81, MK 82, MK 83 and MK 84 general-purpose aerial munitions for the UAE Ministry of Defence under a $1.18 billion contract awarded to EDGE in February 2025. LAHAB received an earlier $1.1 billion contract for the same munitions family in November 2023.

What Other Partnerships Has EDGE Announced?

The MK 82 Penetrator announcement comes as EDGE expands its international defense partnerships. In February, the company agreed with Spain’s EM&E Group to establish a UAE-based joint venture focused on defense technologies and remote weapon stations.

EDGE also partnered with Indra Group in January to establish a defense manufacturing entity in Spain focused on loitering munitions and smart weapons. The company has also agreed to a joint venture with Qatar’s Barzan Holdings aimed at developing advanced defense technologies. In February, EDGE signed a memorandum of understanding with Safran to develop and produce smart weapons.
