Spire Global has secured a contract with the European Space Agency to provide historical weather data derived from its satellites. The agreement, part of ESA’s Third Party Mission program, grants access to Spire’s data gleaned from GNSS-Reflectometry, Polarimetric Radio Occultation and other techniques, offering valuable insight into sea ice, soil moisture and precipitation.
Matthieu Talpe, a remote sensing product engineer at Spire, emphasized that the program aims to supply researchers with innovative Earth observation products. “Our datasets are already shaping the future of climate research, enabling breakthroughs like enhanced weather forecasts at [the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts,” he said.
Peggy Fischer, the ESA’s Third Party Missions manager, noted that collaboration with the U.S. data and analytics company will enhance both research and pre-operational Earth observation capabilities in the region.
Spire Global’s weather data services cater to the needs of various organizations. In Canada, for instance, it assists the government in monitoring vessels in open oceans and high-traffic zones. The company also supports the European Maritime Safety Agency’s global ship tracking mission.
