BAE Systems Report Highlights AI’s Expanding Role in Defense Asset Management

BAE Systems executive on addressing complex asset management challenges with AI

A new report from British multinational BAE Systems shows that defense and aerospace leaders are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence to manage fleets of warships, armored vehicles and combat aircraft as global security threats mount.

The study, “Emerging Technology Behind the Scenes of Defence,” found that 82 percent of decision-makers place AI at the forefront of their digital strategies, while 80 percent said reliable, mission-ready assets are critical amid rising geopolitical tensions.

“The rapidly evolving nature of warfare is placing heightened pressure on many of our customers to meet the demands of a constantly shifting threat landscape. That pressure includes ensuring critical assets operate at peak performance, for as long and as often as possible,” said Andrea Thompson, group managing director of BAE Systems’ digital intelligence business.

Surveying 540 senior IT and business leaders across nine allied nations, the report found that 97 percent face pressure to keep assets mission-ready, yet only 12 percent rated their asset management systems as advanced.

BAE said its PropheSEA platform, already in use with the U.K. Royal Navy and NATO allies, integrates data on an asset’s condition, preparedness and performance with AI to support fast, informed decision-making. The company recently invested in Oxford Dynamics to enhance the system with advanced AI and robotics capabilities.

The report also pointed to big data, condition-based monitoring and advanced modeling tools as priorities for modernizing asset management in 2025.
