Nokia has inaugurated a new R&D and manufacturing facility in Oulu, northern Finland. The facility is designed to develop 5G and 6G networks that will underpin artificial intelligence applications.

Dubbed the “Home of Radio,” the 55,000-square-meter building integrates laboratories for radio network design, real-world verification environments, manufacturing lines and office space under a single roof. About 3,000 employees representing 40 nationalities will work on site, alongside universities, startups and NATO’s DIANA test center.

“Oulu embodies our culture of innovation, and the new campus will be essential to advancing connectivity necessary to power the AI supercycle,” said Justin Hotard, Nokia president and CEO. Finnish President Alexander Stubb, who attended the Friday opening, called 5G and 6G “the neural network” for AI, robotics and the Internet of Things.

Nokia said research will focus on Massive MIMO radios, including its Osprey and Habrok lines, and next-generation 6G solutions. The facility also serves as a testbed for secure and resilient networks with civilian and defense applications.

Sustainability features include an on-site carbon dioxide-based energy station that powers the building and provides surplus heating for 20,000 Oulu households. According to Nokia, all energy consumed is renewable, waste is fully reused and carbon dioxide emissions have been cut by 99 percent.
