Denmark Selects Thales-MBDA’s SAMP/T in Record $9.1B Air Defense Investment

Denmark Troels Lund Poulsen SAMP/T system acquisition

Denmark will purchase the French-Italian SAMP/T air defense system as part of its largest-ever investment in ground-based air defenses, committing $9.1 billion to acquire and operate eight medium- and long-range systems.

The government confirmed Friday that two of the systems will be SAMP/T batteries, making Denmark the first European Union export customer for the system. France and Italy are currently the only operators within the bloc, while several member states field the U.S.-made Patriot.

Danish officials said the choice reflects a need for rapid delivery and a layered approach to counter aerial and missile threats.

“The war in Ukraine clearly demonstrates the need for a modern ground-based air defense system consisting of multiple integrated systems,” Chief of Defence Gen. Michael Hyldgaard said.

Minister of Defence Troels Lund Poulsen noted the challenge that the security situation poses. “We have seen how Russia has violated Polish airspace with several drones… It is a reminder to all of us about the importance of strengthening our combat power,” he told reporters on Friday.

The purchase comes alongside Denmark’s medium-range acquisitions, which include NASAMS, MBDA’s VL MICA and Germany’s IRIS-T systems. Officials said relying on multiple suppliers will shorten delivery timelines and increase flexibility.

SAMP/T, developed by Eurosam, a joint venture of Thales and MBDA’s French and Italian branches, uses the Aster 30 interceptor missile and advanced radar to defend against aircraft, cruise missiles and ballistic threats. An upgraded version, SAMP/T NG, is scheduled to enter production in 2026.

As part of the deal, Denmark will require offset agreements worth more than $1.58 billion to benefit its domestic defense industry.

The planned acquisition follows Poulsen’s announcement in February of the Acceleration Fund, which aims to boost the government’s military spending by $7 billion in 2025 and 2026. The effort, according to the minister, will ensure that Denmark aligns with NATO’s latest capability targets.
