The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration has awarded Saab an order valued at approximately $220 million for sensors and command-and-control systems to support a ground-based air defense system for brigades, with deliveries scheduled for 2027 and 2028.
How Will the New Order Enhance Sweden’s Air Defense?
The defense and security company said Tuesday, Sweden aims to enhance its mobile short-range ground-based air defense system by procuring a command-and-control system and a Giraffe 1X radar. The contract also covers weapon system integration, studies, spare parts and an integration study to incorporate the Giraffe AMB radar for medium-range surveillance. This initiative is designed to strengthen Sweden’s ability to detect and engage airborne threats while preserving flexibility across its ground-based air defense units.
What Did Saab’s Senior Vice President Say About the New Contract?
“We are very proud to contribute to a strengthened ground-based air defence capability for the Swedish brigades. The contract gives an increased capability to control the battle, but also to detect and engage airborne threats through world-class command-and-control and sensor systems,” said Carl-Johan Bergholm, senior vice president and head of business area surveillance at Saab.
