Saab has received a new radar order from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration, or FMV, under a newly signed framework agreement covering the Giraffe 1X system.
The initial call-off order is valued at $70.9 million and includes immediate deliveries of the Giraffe 1X in a Compact Radar Module configuration, Saab said Tuesday. The framework agreement allows the Swedish Armed Forces to deploy the system across multiple operational units as requirements evolve.
What Capability Does the Giraffe 1X Add to Sweden?
The Giraffe 1X is a software-based 3D radar designed for rapid deployment across various platforms, supporting air defense, counter-unmanned aerial systems missions, infrastructure and site protection, and maritime surveillance.
According to Saab, the system’s software-defined architecture allows continuous upgrades to address emerging threats.
“With this order we contribute to immediately strengthening the Swedish Armed Forces’ ability to detect threats in the air and at the sea surface,” said Carl-Johan Bergholm, head of Saab’s surveillance business area. He added that the framework agreement gives Sweden the ability to scale radar capacity quickly when operational needs change.
The Giraffe 1X order builds on a series of recent Saab contracts supporting Sweden’s defense and surveillance architecture. In November, Saab received a $229.1 million order from FMV for sensors and command-and-control systems, including Giraffe 1X radars, for brigade-level air defense.
In June, Saab secured a $152.8 million contract to deliver Giraffe 4A radar systems to the Swedish Armed Forces.
