Albania Invests $508M to Boost Australia’s Guided Weapons Capabilities

Pat Conroy. The Albanese government is investing in two projects at Australia's Defence Establishment Orchard Hills.

Australia announced that the Albanese Government is investing $508 million in two major defense infrastructure projects at Defence Establishment Orchard Hills in Western Sydney, strengthening the nation’s guided weapons and explosive ordnance capabilities.

What Are the Orchard Hills Projects?

The Australian government said Wednesday the projects are part of its Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance plan and include base redevelopment and new facilities for storing explosive ordnance. Backed by up to $21 billion in planned investment and aligned with the 2024 National Defence Strategy, the effort aims to expand Australia’s guided weapons capability and strengthen domestic defense capacity.

“The Albanese Government is delivering a defence future made in Australia and creating thousands of well-paid jobs for locals with this major investment in infrastructure that is critical to our national security,” said Minister for Defence Industry Pat Conroy.

Which Companies Secured Contracts Under the Orchard Hills Initiatives?

Hansen Yuncken secured a $298 million contract to deliver security, infrastructure, and new training and work facilities at Orchard Hills, with completion expected in early 2029 and about 600 jobs created. ADCO Constructions was awarded a $210 million contract to build guided weapons and explosive ordnance storage facilities by late 2027, generating around 300 jobs.

What Is the Economic Impact of the Projects?

The two projects are expected to create about 2,300 jobs, including roughly 900 direct construction roles and 1,400 indirect supply chain positions, while the Orchard Hills base currently employs around 700 Defence personnel and contractors. The contracts are also projected to contribute about $500 million to the New South Wales and Western Sydney economy and include commitments to Indigenous employment, apprenticeships, women in construction and local procurement.
