Canada and Germany have agreed to cooperate on advancing secure, resilient and sovereign artificial intelligence globally.

On Saturday, Evan Solomon, Canada’s minister of artificial intelligence and digital innovation, and Karsten Wildberger, Germany’s minister for digital transformation and government modernization, signed a joint declaration of intent on artificial intelligence at the Munich Security Conference.

Innovators from leading technology companies and top decision makers from defense agencies will be speaking at the Potomac Officers Club’s 2026 Artificial Intelligence Summit on March 18. How Will the Canada-Germany Partnership Support AI Development & Deployment?

Under the partnership, the two nations intend to collaborate on expanding compute infrastructure and talent development for researchers, startups and industries to drive AI innovation.

The two nations also plan to work with leading research organizations to promote safe-by-design principles for AI systems.

Additionally, Canada and Germany launched the new Sovereign Technology Alliance to establish a stronger sovereign AI capacity and reduce strategic dependencies.

“Artificial intelligence is becoming foundational to economic strength and national security. At a moment of rapid technological change, Canada and Germany are choosing to build,” stated Solomon. “Through our strengthened AI partnership and the launch of the Sovereign Technology Alliance, we are expanding secure compute capacity, investing in resilient infrastructure, supporting our innovators and reducing strategic technology dependencies. This is about delivering practical results for our economies and our citizens.”

What Does Canada and Germany’s Previous Technology Partnership Cover?

The recent AI partnership builds on the Canada-Germany Digital Alliance, a partnership to deepen cooperation on advanced technologies. Announced in December during the G7 Industry, Digital and Technology Ministers’ Meeting in Montreal, Canada, the alliance is expected to accelerate collaboration on AI, digital infrastructure, digital sovereignty, quantum technologies and broader digital economy innovation.
