Microsoft to Invest $1B in Thailand Cloud & AI Infrastructure

Microsoft's Brad Smith. Microsoft has announced plans for a $1 billion investment on Thailand's cloud and AI infrastructure.

Microsoft has unveiled plans to invest more than $1 billion in cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure and operations across Thailand from 2026 to 2028.

What Is Included in the Investment?

The company said Tuesday the investment, announced after a meeting between Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith and Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, expands its partnership with the Thai government to support digital development and strengthen the country’s position in the regional digital economy. The initiative will focus on three priorities: building accessible, world-class technology infrastructure, establishing a secure and inclusive digital foundation, and equipping workers, educators and innovators with the skills needed to thrive in an AI-driven future.

“As the cloud and AI become central to economic growth and national competitiveness, countries need both access to world‑class technology and the know‑how to put it to work,” said Smith.

How Does the Partnership Support Thailand’s AI Strategy?

A central part of the company’s Advancing National Growth, Prosperity and Global Competitiveness with AI program, the initiative aligns with Thailand’s national digital and AI strategy, which aims to position the country as a regional hub for emerging technologies. Microsoft said its approach focuses on expanding access to cloud platforms while supporting adoption across government, business and education sectors.

In addition, Microsoft will work with partners including Gulf Development, Advanced Info Service, Charoen Pokphand Group and True Corp to support the Building Thailand’s AI-Powered Future” initiative. Meanwhile, the company is collaborating with Thai agencies, including the Office of the Council of State, on governance and regulatory frameworks tied to responsible AI and data use.

How Does the Investment Support the Thai Workforce?

Microsoft has already helped more than 2 million Thai citizens acquire AI skills. New programs such as Microsoft Elevate for Educators and Microsoft Elevate for Changemakers will expand access to training and certifications. Partnerships with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Labour aim to reach students and certify 150,000 workers, aligning skills development with Thailand’s innovation-driven industries.
