- The U.K. and Australia have agreed to collaborate on frontier AI systems
- The agreement includes shared research, AI testing standards and staff exchanges between the two nations
- The partnership follows warnings that frontier AI is becoming more capable of sophisticated cyberattacks
The U.K. and Australia signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday to expand cooperation on artificial intelligence security and safety, establishing a partnership between the U.K. AI Security Institute and the Australian AI Safety Institute.
What Does the Agreement Cover?
The agreement calls for the institutes to collaborate on frontier AI technologies, including their potential use in cyberattacks and their ability to strengthen defensive capabilities. Under the arrangement, the organizations will exchange information on frontier AI capabilities, conduct joint research into emerging security risks, develop best practices for testing and evaluating AI systems, and share research findings. The MOU also establishes a pathway for regular staff exchanges aimed at strengthening operational collaboration between the two countries.
Why Are the UK & Australia Expanding Cooperation?
The announcement comes as new research from the U.K. AI Security Institute found that advanced AI systems are rapidly enhancing their ability to carry out sophisticated cyberattacks.
The partnership builds on broader U.K.-Australia cooperation in defense AI research and infrastructure development. In February, Australia’s Department of Defence partnered with the University of South Australia and the U.K.’s Alan Turing Institute to advance AI and data science research for defense applications.
U.K. AI Minister Kanishka Narayan said cooperation with allied nations is becoming increasingly important as AI capabilities and related cybersecurity risks evolve. Narayan added that no country can address cybersecurity challenges posed by rapidly advancing AI technologies alone.
“By working hand in hand with trusted partners such as Australia, we can stay ahead of the risks, strengthen our defenses and make sure AI is used to improve lives for Brits and Aussies alike,” Narayan said.
