SNU, Hanwha Aerospace Partner to Advance Defense AI Research and Talent

Seoul National University and Hanwha Aerospace have agreed to expand industry-academia collaboration in defense artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies as part of an effort to develop next-generation talent and strengthen Korea’s defense industry competitiveness.

The signing ceremony brought together senior leaders from SNU, Hanwha Group and Hanwha’s aerospace and technology businesses.

How Will SNU and Hanwha Aerospace Advance Defense AI?

SNU said Monday the partnership will combine academic research, talent development and industry support to establish a stronger foundation for defense AI innovation.

“We will further strengthen our capabilities in education, research, and industry-academia collaboration in defense AI and work to produce research achievements at a world-class level,” Ryu Hong Lim, president of SNU. “By fostering creative, interdisciplinary global talent equipped to meet the needs of society and industry, we will contribute to Korea’s development and competitiveness.”

Under the agreement, Hanwha will support the construction of the Hanwha AI Frontier Hall at SNU and provide funding to enhance the university’s education and research capabilities. SNU intends to use the investment to elevate its defense AI research capabilities toward a world-class level.

“Defense AI is an important field not only for the future development of society, the economy, and industry, but also for strengthening national competitiveness,” said Kim Dong-kwan, executive vice chairman at Hanwha Group. “I hope this agreement will give students and researchers opportunities to take on new challenges and produce world-class research achievements, ultimately contributing to Korea’s competitiveness.”

How Does the SNU-Hanwha Partnership Fit South Korea’s Broader AI Push?

The SNU-Hanwha Aerospace agreement comes as South Korea pursues a broader strategy to expand its AI and advanced technology capabilities across the semiconductor, computing, and research sectors.

In June, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix announced plans to invest more than $500 billion in a new semiconductor manufacturing hub in southwestern South Korea, including four new memory chip plants. The initiative reflects growing demand for high-capacity memory driven by the expansion of AI systems as part of a broader government-backed effort to strengthen the country’s advanced technology competitiveness.

South Korea is also expanding the computing infrastructure needed to support AI development. In July, NAVER, NVIDIA and Brookfield proposed expanding a sovereign AI factory at NAVER’s GAK Sejong data center to 200 megawatts by 2028. The facility is intended to provide production-scale computing capacity for AI developers, enterprises and government organizations.
