Rheinmetall Kicks Off Localization Efforts for Lynx IFV Manufacture in Romania

Rheinmetall Lynx infantry fighting vehicle in Romania

Rheinmetall has formed a network of local partners in Romania that will combine with its resources to advance the domestic production of ammunition and the Lynx infantry fighting vehicle.

The focus on local production involves Mediaș-based Rheinmetall Automecanica, which has strengthened its domestic supply chain to reduce reliance on external suppliers.

In cooperation with Uzina Automecanica Moreni, Interactive Software SRL, MarcTel-SIT and other local firms, Rheinmetall is integrating procurement and assembly processes into its operations in Romania. The collaboration also extends to local maintenance services for its military production facilities in the country.

The partnerships will ensure operational readiness for Rheinmetall Munitions Romania, which is poised to produce medium-caliber ammunition for the IFVs. Additionally, Rheinmetall is providing technological expertise to the Victoria Explosive Powder Factory to assist in the development of a propylene plant.

The Rheinmetall Excellence Centre in Romania is also enhancing local capabilities with its comprehensive training programs and advanced simulators. These initiatives aim to equip Romanian employees with practical experience and technical skills in advanced defense technologies, including the Lynx IFV.

This push for Lynx production aligns with Bucharest’s plan to acquire 246 IFVs under a $2.9 billion contract with Rheinmetall. The armored vehicles are intended to equip 15 mechanized battalions with a highly mobile and versatile platform designed for modern combat.
