Thales to Supply Radios, Set Up Local Production for Malaysia Defense Programs

Thales has unveiled a series of programs to expand the Malaysian Armed Forces’ tactical communications capabilities.

The initiatives, announced at Defence Services Asia & NATSEC Asia 2026, support Malaysia’s defense modernization efforts and align with the country’s push to strengthen domestic industrial capacity, the company said Thursday.

What Capabilities Is Thales Delivering?

Thales will supply more than 100 tactical radios to the Malaysian Army under the Self-Propelled Howitzer program, introducing systems such as SYNAPS-H and SquadNet for the first time in the country.

The company will also provide 16 airborne radios for Royal Malaysian Air Force helicopters in partnership with Weststar, expanding its communications portfolio into air platforms.

In addition, Thales is supporting Malaysia’s AV4 armored vehicle program through proof-of-concept work for battlefield management systems and radio integration.

How Is Thales Expanding Its Local Footprint?

As part of the effort, Thales will establish a local assembly line in Segamat, Johor, in partnership with Advanced Defence Systems.

The facility is expected to support the production of next-generation SYNAPS software-defined radios tailored to Malaysian requirements, with plans to assemble more than 1,000 units over the next six years.

The move aligns with Malaysia’s national defense industrial policy, which emphasizes technology transfer and increased local content in defense programs.

Why Does This Matter for Malaysia’s Defense Strategy?

The programs are intended to improve interoperability and coordination across land and air operations, particularly as the Malaysian military adopts more networked and digital capabilities.

“With the rise in asymmetric threats, interoperability for missions in the sky or on land is critical,” said Florian Riou, country director for Thales in Malaysia.
