The United States is strengthening its bilateral ties in the areas of energy, defense, cybersecurity and economic growth. The Department of State said Wednesday that the two nations held their second strategic dialogue in Washington to advance shared goals.

The dialogue comes months after the U.S. entered a similar partnership with Australia to bolster cooperation on critical minerals, defense, technology development and economic growth.

What Agreements Were Reached on Energy and Economic Cooperation?

The two countries signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance the security of North Macedonia’s natural gas supply through the purchase of U.S. liquefied natural gas. Officials said the agreement is intended to improve energy resilience and strengthen bilateral trade.

The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation also committed $5 million to restart antimony mining in North Macedonia, supporting efforts to diversify critical mineral supply chains. Both sides emphasized the importance of transparent investment policies to drive economic growth and attract U.S. businesses.

How Are the US and North Macedonia Expanding Security Cooperation?

The U.S. and North Macedonia also reaffirmed their commitment to NATO and collective defense, with Skopje outlining plans to increase defense spending to 5 percent of gross domestic product by 2035.

Washington also announced cybersecurity assistance through the FALCON program, including infrastructure assessments and embedded advisers within North Macedonia’s Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Digital Transformation to strengthen digital resilience.

The U.S. pledged over $3.5 million in security assistance to enhance North Macedonia’s border management and law enforcement, targeting transnational crime and illegal migration.
