Airbus has partnered with Mistral AI to expand the use of trusted artificial intelligence technologies in its commercial aviation, helicopter, defense and space businesses.

The agreement is intended to support Airbus’ efforts to integrate advanced, ethical AI capabilities into operations, engineering processes and future aerospace platforms while meeting security and sovereignty requirements for sensitive applications, Airbus said Thursday.

What Does the Airbus-Mistral AI Partnership Cover?

The agreement gives Airbus the right to use Mistral’s AI models within its own systems, in secure cloud platforms or in other environments that meet operational and customer requirements. Airbus will also work with Mistral AI’s research teams and contribute to shaping future product development, helping adapt AI capabilities to demanding aerospace missions.

What Are the Key Areas of Collaboration?

The companies are exploring several areas of cooperation, including enhancing industrial processes through automation of technical documentation and supporting engineering and design with AI-assisted simulations and development tools. The partnership aims to address defense requirements through secure applications, including support for cyber investigations and coding. It is also focusing on advancing onboard AI capabilities for aircraft and spacecraft to boost situational awareness and operational safety, building on Airbus’ existing work in crewed-uncrewed teaming and autonomous military aviation programs. Airbus previously partnered with Singapore’s Defence Science and Technology Agency to demonstrate crewed-uncrewed helicopter operations using the H225M and Flexrotor uncrewed aerial system, and separately teamed with Helsing to develop AI technologies for the Wingman unmanned combat aircraft.
