UK-Australia Partnership Seeks to Cut Weapons Development Cost

The U.K. Defence Science and Technology Laboratory and Australia’s Defence Science and Technology Group have agreed to synthesize their capabilities in modular technology to jointly develop advanced subsystems for weapons at reduced costs.

Under the partnership, the two organizations will integrate Dstl’s Modular Weapons Testbed concept with the plug-and-launch modular technology of DSTG’s SHARKTOOTH small missile developmental program to create better systems for their armed forces.

The new weapons technologies expected to be developed from the collaboration include low-cost sensors for target detection and tracking, 3D printed or additively designed engines, and modular fuses and warheads.

Development Risks

London said Dstl and DSTG’s sharing of ideas and expertise will help minimize development risks and accelerate the deployment of new capabilities against emerging threats. It also noted that the partnership promotes the interoperability of British and Australian military forces while advancing technology development cooperation and investment in sovereign defense ventures.

The partnership will benefit military programs, including the U.K. Ministry of Defence’s Complex Weapons Pipeline and Australia’s Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance enterprise.

DSTG and Dstl foster collaboration in other areas, including through a senior staff exchange and reciprocal sharing of research facilities. The arrangement enables maximum use of specialist facilities and spare capacity, eliminating investment in new infrastructure.
