US OKs $510M Israeli Purchase of Boeing Munition Guidance Kits

Israel to buy Boeing munition guidance kits

Boeing is the principal contractor for a possible $510 million foreign military sale of munition guidance equipment that the U.S. State Department has approved for Israel.

The Potomac Officers Club will host the 2025 GovCon International Summit, where discussions on global collaboration and defense are expected to uncover potential opportunities for contractors. Register today.

According to a Defense Security Cooperation Agency announcement Monday, Tel Aviv’s purchase request includes Boeing’s Joint Direct Attack Munition guidance kits: 3,845 orders of the KMU-558B/B variant for the BLU-109 bomb body and 3,289 KMU-572 F/B for the MK 82 bomb body. Israel also requested U.S. government and contractor support on equipment and technical services, such as engineering and logistics.

The agency said part of the JDAM guidance kit deliveries may be drawn from U.S. government stock. It noted that the proposed sale will strengthen Israel’s capability for border defense without altering the region’s balance of power.

Interoperability Driver Among Allies

The JDAM acquisition is also expected to boost Israeli forces’ interoperability with the U.S. military, particularly with the U.S. Air Force. In October 2024, Boeing secured a $600 million contract for JDAM and Laser Joint Direct Attack Munition testing and integration. JDAM features a GPS receiver for converting unguided bombs into precision-guided munitions, while LJDAM combines GPS and laser guidance.

The Canadian military also has JDAM kits in its arsenal. The U.S. approved Ottawa’s purchase of the equipment in May 2024, an FMS valued at $96.4 million.
