Northrop Grumman is set to deliver its AN/TPS-78 Advanced Capability ground-based long-range air surveillance radars to Paraguay.

The deal falls under the U.S. Foreign Military Sales program and is expected to enhance the South American nation’s air surveillance capabilities, helping detect manned and unmanned systems within its national airspace.

The radar acquisition was discussed during U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit in March, during which he congratulated Paraguayan President Santiago Peña’s administration on the country’s first foreign military sale.

The Potomac Officers Club’s 2025 Intel Summit will gather leaders to discuss various topics, including the impact of new technologies on intelligence and its role in national security. Reserve your seat now.

The AN/TPS-78 radar features an advanced small target unmanned aerial system and a maritime tracking subsystem with integrated automatic detection and tracking. It also includes a SiGe solid-state transmitter and a sidelobe antenna array. With these features, the radar offers high mobility and reliability for survivability.

“The Northrop Grumman AN/TPS-78 ADCAP radar provides the long-range coverage and precision tracking required by the Paraguayan Air Force to monitor and secure the country’s airspace,” said Gregory Teitelbaum, vice president for land and maritime sensors at Northrop Grumman.

Paraguay is among the nations in the region that are significantly investing in modernizing their defense capabilities. A January report from Breaking Defense revealed that the country will acquire six Super Tucanos from Brazil’s Embraer, marking a significant milestone as these jets will be the nation’s first combat aircraft.
