General Dynamics Land Systems has formed a partnership with Daimler Truck to develop, manufacture and service military logistics vehicles in select markets. In a statement issued Friday, the companies outlined their plans, including tailoring services to the unique needs of their customers.
Franziska Cusumano, CEO of Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks at Daimler Truck AG, said working with General Dynamics will allow Mercedes to offer a comprehensive range of services globally, covering basic vehicles to custom-designed equipment and chassis.
The recently signed agreement expands the two companies’ collaboration on Canada’s Logistics Vehicle Modernization initiative, under which the Canadian Armed Forces are expected to receive more than 1,500 off-road logistics trucks.
The initiative aims to equip Canadian troops with new light and heavy logistics vehicles for various uses, including personnel transport and cargo handling. According to Canada’s Department of National Defence, the first deliveries under the LVM contract are slated for 2027, with initial operational capability targeted for 2028 and full operational capability for 2030.
“Our collaboration with Daimler Truck on Canada’s LVM program has shown us that we have the knowledge and experience to take our tried-and-tested model internationally with the objective of offering the right solutions for militaries on both sides of the Atlantic,” said Dave Paddock, president of General Dynamics Land Systems.
Daimler is not alone in turning to defense markets. Porsche SE has also moved to deepen its footprint, including plans to launch a defense-focused investment platform with European partners.
