Australia Reinforces Collins Class Sustainment Effort at Third Product of Concern Summit

Collins-Class Submarine. Australia held its third Product of Concern Summit to sustain the Collins-class submarine fleet.

Australia held its third Product of Concern Summit in Canberra, as part of efforts to enhance the sustainment of the Collins-class submarine fleet.

The meeting was led by Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy, joined by Finance Minister Katy Gallagher and other senior government and industry leaders, the Office of the Minister for Defence Industry said Monday.

“These summits bring together government, industry and Defence officials to collaborate and agree on plans to improve the sustainment performance of Collins class submarines,” said Conroy.

“Regular Product of Concern summits ensure that Defence and industry officials are coming together to improve capability delivery for the Australian Defence Force,” he added.

Why Was Collins-Class Submarine Declared a Product of Concern?

The Collins class sustainment was designated as a Product of Concern in December 2024 after it was determined that the submarines were operating beyond their original design life. Defence noted that this extended service requires enhanced support to ensure all sustainment needs are met and the fleet remains operational and effective.

What Measures Have Been Introduced to Support the Fleet?

Under the Australian Submarine Enterprise, Defence and ASC partnered to deliver a remediation program aimed at addressing the issues identified. The collaboration has introduced measures to enhance workforce skills and productivity.

“These efforts are critical to ensuring the Collins class remain among the world’s most capable conventionally powered submarines,” said Conroy.
