Raytheon has secured a $1.7 billion contract from the government of Spain for the delivery of four Patriot air and missile defense systems.

The RTX business unit said the foreign military sale covers the provision of launchers, radars, command and control stations, and training materials.

Raytheon is working with aerospace and defense company Sener and other Spanish companies on the Patriot systems.

How Is Raytheon’s Patriot Supporting Spain’s Defense?

Pete Bata, senior vice president of Global Patriot at Raytheon, stated that the company’s collaboration with the Spanish government and local defense manufacturers will strengthen Madrid’s “readiness against evolving threats.”

“Modernizing air and missile defense is vital to Spain’s security and sovereignty,” the executive commented.

“Raytheon is continuing to support Spain’s government while working with their robust defense industry to deliver Patriot,” he added.

Patriot is a ground-based air and missile defense system capable of defending against long-range cruise missiles, tactical ballistic missiles, advanced aircraft and other airborne threats. It is equipped with radars to provide fire control, detect and track targets, and guide interceptors toward the enemy missile or aircraft.

Which Countries Have a Patriot System?

According to Raytheon, over 240 Patriot fire units have been delivered across 19 nations worldwide.

Romania also recently awarded Raytheon contracts in April and December for the delivery of Patriot systems.

Germany, with support from Norway, is providing Patriot systems to Ukraine, enabling Kyiv to protect its civilian population from Russia’s air attacks.
