The Government of Canada is providing $195 million through the Strategic Response Fund to support Xanadu Quantum Technologies’ $893 million investment project.

Evan Solomon, Canada’s minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation and minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, announced the investment Friday.

Why Is Canada Investing in Xanadu’s Quantum Technology Project?

The project will expand Xanadu’s research and development facility while establishing advanced manufacturing capabilities intended to support the development, production and commercialization of quantum technologies in Canada.

The initiative is expected to create 275 high-quality jobs and provide specialized facilities for quantum technology development and manufacturing. It will also support partnerships between Xanadu, Canadian research institutions and small and medium-sized businesses.

Industry Minister Mélanie Joly said the investment reflects Canada’s effort to develop industries that can contribute to economic growth and sovereignty.

“Quantum technology represents a tremendous opportunity to create good jobs, strengthen our economic sovereignty and grow world-leading industries here at home,” Joly added.

What Does Xanadu Say About Project OPTIMISM?

Xanadu founder and CEO Christian Weedbrook described the agreement as a major milestone for the company’s plans to develop utility-scale quantum computing capabilities.

Weedbrook said utility-scale quantum computers will require specialized manufacturing infrastructure and that the government’s investment will allow Xanadu to establish those capabilities in Canada.

“With the Government of Canada’s commitment through the Strategic Response Fund, we can move forward with establishing that infrastructure here at home, strengthening Canada’s quantum supply chain and creating a foundation for future quantum data center deployment,” he added.

How Has Canada Been Strengthening Its Quantum Technology Ecosystem?

The investment in Xanadu comes as Canada continues to expand its domestic quantum technology capabilities through government programs, research investments and partnerships with industry.

In December 2025, the Canadian government advanced its efforts to strengthen the country’s quantum technology capabilities and build a domestic ecosystem through the Canadian Quantum Champions Program. Under Phase 1, the government awarded agreements of up to $23 million each to Anyon Systems, Nord Quantique, Photonic and Xanadu Quantum Technologies to advance the development of fault-tolerant quantum computers for industrial applications.

The government continued that push in April 2026, when Canada announced an investment supporting quantum computing research at the University of Saskatchewan, highlighting the role of academic institutions in advancing the country’s quantum capabilities.

More recently, in August 2026, a collaboration involving IonQ and CMC Microsystems focused on quantum technology in Canada, underscoring growing industry partnerships around the country’s quantum technology ecosystem.
