Leidos Launches Australia’s First Fixed-Wing Aircrew Certifications

James Woodhams, VP of airborne solutions at Leidos

Leidos Australia has introduced nationally accredited certifications for fixed-wing aircrew training, marking the first such qualifications in the country and setting a new standard for professional aviation training.

As an approved Registered Training Organisation, Leidos is now issuing Certificates III and IV in Airborne Operations, which were developed with Industry Skills Australia and released earlier this year. Leidos said the qualifications are designed to improve training standards across the aviation sector and formally recognize aircrew skills in national security and emergency response operations.

“Aircrew play a critical role in national security and emergency response,” James Woodhams, vice president of airborne solutions at Leidos, said in a statement. “Providing them with these formal credentials supports national recognition of their skill, professionalism and dedication.” He also noted that the new qualifications will help promote aviation career pathways.

Leidos began work on the initiative two years ago after identifying a gap in available aviation qualifications. The release of the new certifications is a product of over a year of collaboration between industry stakeholders, training providers and regulators. The company said it will issue the certifications directly through its RTO.

The announcement comes a week after Leidos Australia secured a contract to manage cloud and IT services for Geoscience Australia, the government agency responsible for Earth science data. Under the agreement, the company will oversee cloud platforms, on-premise infrastructure, networks, cybersecurity, application support and help-desk services, focusing on maintaining critical systems while advancing the agency’s digital transformation.
