UK Space Agency Launches New Funding Round to Advance Satellite Communications Technology

United Kingdom's flag. The UK Space Agency launched a new funding round to advance satellite communications technology.

The U.K. government has unveiled a $40 million funding round to support companies developing satellite communications technologies for low Earth orbit constellations, the U.K. Space Agency announced Wednesday.

What Is the Purpose of the Funding Program?

The investment marks the second round of the U.K. Space Agency’s Connectivity in Low Earth Orbit, or C-LEO, program. The initiative supports the development of advanced satellite components and technologies designed for networks operating hundreds of miles above Earth. These constellations enable global connectivity services, including broadband access and data links that reach remote regions, maritime routes and aircraft in flight. In addition to strengthening national security and defense operations, the investment is intended to help the government secure a larger share of the $53 billion global market for these technologies.

How Will the Investment Support Industry?

Projects backed by the program will focus on technologies such as enhanced spacecraft hardware, artificial intelligence tools for managing data delivery and stronger communication links between satellites. In addition, the funding aims to help companies fast-track the development, testing and deployment of their technologies. This could position participants for future agreements with satellite network operators.

“This new funding will support the development of smarter satellites with better hardware, the use of AI to make data delivery faster and improved connections between spacecraft. This is part of the government’s commitment to keeping U.K. companies at the forefront of satellite communications, delivering economic growth and strengthening our defence and national security,” said Space Minister Liz Lloyd.

Previous Investment in Space Innovation

The funding follows an earlier government investment aimed at strengthening the U.K.’s space technology sector. In December 2025, the U.K. Space Agency allocated roughly $22.7 million to 17 projects across areas such as Earth observation, satellite communications, space domain awareness, in-orbit servicing and manufacturing, and position, navigation and timing.
