Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration has awarded Saab an order valued at about $274.1 million to continue conceptual studies for the country’s future fighter aircraft systems. The work will run from 2025 to 2027, Saab announced Tuesday.
The new contract expands on an agreement signed in March 2024 for early conceptual studies. Saab said the order covers manned and unmanned platform concepts within a system-of-systems framework, as well as technology development and demonstration projects. The company will continue collaboration with FMV, the Swedish Armed Forces, the Swedish Defence Research Agency, GKN Aerospace and other industry partners.
“This order sets the next step on our joint journey in delivering innovative solutions to meet future operational needs of the Swedish Armed Forces and other customers,” said Lars Tossman, head of Saab Aeronautics.
Gripen E, GlobalEye as Concept Platforms
Saab and FMV previously agreed to leverage Gripen E and GlobalEye technologies in future fighter studies, as outlined in the March 2024 contract. The company also secured follow-on FMV awards, including an April 2024 order worth about $49.8 million to advance Gripen E capabilities and a June 2025 contract worth $307.1 million for new Gripen E equipment.
On the airborne early warning and control side, GlobalEye has also been integrated into the studies. FMV awarded Saab a June 2024 contract
worth about $244 million for a third GlobalEye aircraft, following an earlier order for two systems valued at $687 million in 2022.
