The United States and Indonesia have established a major defense cooperation partnership to expand bilateral military collaboration and support regional stability in the Indo-Pacific.

What Areas Does the Partnership Cover?

Announced by U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, a two-time Wash100 Award recipient, and Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin on Monday, the framework is structured around three pillars: military modernization and capacity building, training and professional military education, and exercises and operational cooperation.

Under the agreement, both countries will explore joint initiatives in areas such as maritime and subsurface operations; autonomous systems; and maintenance, repair and overhaul support to improve readiness.

The partnership also includes plans to expand joint special forces training and increase participation in professional military education programs.

How Does This Build on Existing Cooperation?

The new framework builds on years of defense engagement between the two countries, including joint training exercises aimed at improving interoperability and operational coordination.

In 2024, Indonesian naval forces and a U.S. Naval Special Warfare unit conducted a combined exercise focused on maritime tactics, mission planning and combat operations.

Those activities followed earlier agreements to expand training opportunities, enhance educational exchanges and improve maritime domain awareness as part of a shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific.
