- BAE Systems will provide EPAWSS electronic warfare systems for South Korea’s F-15K modernization program
- The system delivers 360-degree threat detection and countermeasures in contested electromagnetic environments
- The modernization effort is intended to strengthen the F-15K fleet’s survivability and interoperability with U.S. forces
BAE Systems has secured a contract from Boeing to supply AN/ALQ-250 Eagle Passive Active Warning Survivability Systems, or EPAWSS, for the Republic of Korea Air Force’s F-15K Slam Eagle fighter aircraft as part of a fleet modernization effort.
What Capabilities Will EPAWSS Provide?
BAE Systems said Monday EPAWSS is designed to provide 360-degree threat detection and countermeasures, giving pilots enhanced situational awareness and self-defense capabilities. The company added that the system is intended to enhance the F-15’s existing speed, range and payload while enabling pilots to operate more effectively in contested, signal-dense electromagnetic environments.
Phillip Casalegno, F-15 international program director at BAE Systems, said the company has collaborated with Boeing, the ROKAF and regional industry partners to deliver advanced electronic warfare capabilities for the aircraft upgrade.
“Our focus is on providing allies with EW capabilities needed to support regional stability and security,” said Casalegno.
What Is EPAWSS?
EPAWSS is BAE Systems’ all-digital electronic warfare system for the F-15 aircraft. The company said the system processes electromagnetic signals to provide pilots with a comprehensive view of the battlespace and uses high-speed scanning to detect a broad range of radio frequency threats, including low-probability-of-intercept signals. The system features a modular, open-system architecture designed to support future upgrades while enhancing the aircraft’s reliability, maintainability and service life.
How Does the Effort Support South Korea’s F-15K Fleet?
The Republic of Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration is upgrading its fleet of 59 F-15K fighter jets with EPAWSS through a foreign military sales program. The modernization effort is intended to strengthen threat response and interoperability with U.S. forces.
