The Norwegian Nuclear Commission has selected Amentum and Multiconsult Norge to assess nuclear energy’s viability as a future power system for Norway. Announced Monday, the study will evaluate reactor types and power plant designs, including small and advanced modular reactors.
Amentum said it will assess each option’s technological readiness, implementation timelines, commercial availability, construction and operational costs, and suitability for potential integration into the national power grid.
Andy White, senior vice president of Amentum Energy & Environment International, said the company will provide Norway with “expert, impartial analysis” based on its experience supporting new nuclear programs in Poland and the United Arab Emirates. “We understand the journey that new nuclear power nations need to undertake,” he said in a statement.
The new contract adds to Amentum’s initiatives in Norway. In May, the engineering giant and Multiconsult began supporting the country’s national nuclear cleanup efforts under a joint venture with Norsk Nukleær Dekommisjonering. That project includes safety case management and training for decommissioning sites in Halden and Kjeller and work at Norway’s national waste facility, KLDRA.
Amentum is also helping the town of Halden explore the feasibility of building a small modular reactor to meet local energy needs. Under that separate contract, Amentum and Multiconsult are evaluating potential suppliers, technical standards and environmental impact.
