BlackSky Technology has secured a new contract with an international customer that grants early access to its next-generation Gen-3 imaging capabilities to support Ukraine.
The agreement extends the unnamed client’s current subscription by adding sharper satellite imagery to its existing Gen-2 data collection services.
According to BlackSky, both generations of satellites can now be used simultaneously through its Spectra tasking and analytics platform, allowing integration of high-frequency Gen-2 data and on-demand Gen-3 imagery. The upgraded Gen-3 satellites provide 35-centimeter imagery with rapid revisit rates, enabling automated identification and classification of vehicles, vessels, aircraft and other military assets.

BlackSky CEO Brian O’Toole said the contract highlights the combined operational value of the two satellite generations, calling it a “comprehensive tip-and-cue utility” that supports both strategic and tactical intelligence missions. “As we integrate more Gen-3 satellites into the fleet, our early access customers will experience unparalleled reliability and quality of imagery at industry-leading speeds,” he added.
BlackSky currently operates two Gen-3 satellites and is set to field a six-satellite Gen-3 constellation later this year.
Demand for Satellite Surveillance in Europe
The Gen-3 contract follows a multimillion-dollar contract Germany signed with Planet Labs last week for satellite monitoring over selected European regions. Local media said the deal would benefit Ukraine and its defense capabilities.
The BlackSky contract also comes just a month after NATO’s selection of a Planet Labs platform to sustain the alliance’s space-based surveillance and enhance early warnings and maritime domain awareness.
