Australia is expanding its counter-drone capabilities, committing up to $5 billion over the next decade to strengthen sovereign defense systems and respond to evolving battlefield threats.
The Albanese government said Tuesday the investment will fund the development and deployment of advanced counter-unmanned aerial system technologies for the Australian Defence Force, building on priorities outlined in the 2026 National Defence Strategy and Integrated Investment Program.
Why Is Australia Scaling Counter-Drone Investment?
The funding reflects growing concern over the rapid proliferation of drones in modern conflict.
“With the war in Ukraine and conflicts in the Middle East showing how uncrewed aerial systems are increasingly being employed in conflict, the development of sovereign counter-drone solutions is essential to ensure the Australian Defence Force can detect, assess and respond to these threats,” said Pat Conroy, Australian minister for defense industry.
The investment is part of a wider $15.74 billion allocation for drone, counter-drone and autonomous systems under the Integrated Investment Program.
What Capabilities Are Being Fielded First?
As part of the initial rollout, the government awarded early-stage contracts through the Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator’s Mission Syracuse initiative:
- AIM Defence was awarded $15.2 million to advance its Fractl high-energy laser system, designed to track and destroy drones, including fast-moving and small targets.
- SYPAQ Systems secured $7.4 million to develop Corvo Strike, an interceptor drone capable of targeting and eliminating larger uncrewed systems.
These technologies are expected to integrate with the ADF’s broader command-and-control architecture under the LAND156 program.
How Does This Fit Into Australia’s Broader Defense Strategy?
The new funding follows a $363.5 million investment in guided weapons infrastructure at Orchard Hills to expand domestic munitions capacity and support thousands of jobs. It also builds on a $125.9 million investment to build and deliver Bluebottle uncrewed surface vessels for enhanced maritime surveillance.
